What is Custom (Wavefront) LASIK?

Custom LASIK is a highly sophisticated type of LASIK surgery that involves diagnosing and treating corneal imperfections unique to each patient. Custom LASIK involves the use of Wavefront LASIK technology, a computer-guided system that creates a detailed 3D map of a patient's eyes, including the eyes' unique ocular irregularities. The surgeon uses this information to create a customized treatment plan.

Custom (Wavefront) LASIK vs. Traditional LASIK

While traditional LASIK is an excellent treatment for basic corneal distortions - nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, Custom LASIK addresses "higher-order aberrations" - visual imperfections that are more complicated, unique to the individual, and detrimental to the crispness of one's vision. Using advanced technology, Custom LASIK addresses these problems by precisely diagnosing them.

The Custom (Wavefront) LASIK procedure

The Custom LASIK procedure usually takes about 15 minutes. The surgeon begins the procedure by shining a special light into the patient's eye; the light bounces off the eye and into the Wavefront sensor, which creates a 3D image of the cornea. The doctor uses this image to custom-create the patient's treatment plan. Next, the surgeon re-shapes the cornea; this portion of the treatment, as well as the recovery, is the same as traditional LASIK surgery. Patients can usually return to work within a day or so of the procedure, and many enjoy results in as little as one or two days.
