What is LASIK?

LASIK surgery is a laser procedure designed to correct certain visual problems by re-shaping the cornea, the part of the eye that refracts light onto the lens. When the cornea is misshaped, the images it sends to the lens are distorted, causing blurred and distorted vision. By re-shaping the cornea, LASIK surgery improves visual acuity and reduces or eliminates a patient's needs for corrective eyewear.

There are several types of LASIK surgery, including traditional LASIK, Custom LASIK, IntraLASIK, Epi-LASIK, and Wavefront LASIK. There are also numerous alternatives to LASIK, including PRK, LASEK, implantable contact lenses (ICLs), intraocular lenses (IOLs), conductive keratoplasty (CK), and monovision. To learn more about these options, contact Northwest Eye today. We welcome patients from Maple Grove, Wayzata, Plymouth, Robbinsdale, and other communities throughout Minnesota and beyond.

The LASIK Procedure

The surgeon begins the LASIK procedure by administering topical eye drops, which completely numb the eye. Next, the surgeon creates a flap on the outer surface of the eye through which he accesses the underlying cornea. Next, he carefully re-shapes the cornea using an excimer laser. Then, he replaces the flap. Finally, he covers the eye with a protective shield. Patients can usually return to work within a couple days of the procedure, and many enjoy improved vision immediately or within a few weeks. Complete recovery generally takes about six months.

The Northwest Eye team is dedicated to our patients throughout the LASIK process, from the initial consultation to the surgery and recovery process. Contact Northwest Eye today to schedule a LASIK consultation; we welcome individuals in Minneapolis and throughout the Twin Cities area, and we frequently treat patients from locations worldwide.

LASIK Candidates

LASIK candidates must meet several basic requirements: they should be at least 18 years of age, not have a history of eye infection or injury, demonstrate refractive stability for at least the previous year, and have realistic expectations for the procedure. Patients should also be aware of their financing options to cover the cost of LASIK surgery.
