Macular Degeneration Information and Treatment
Macular degeneration is a degenerative eye condition that affects the inner part of your retina (the macula) that distinguishes fine details. When the macula slowly deteriorates (macular degeneration), it causes mild to severe vision loss.
There are 2 main types of macular degeneration:
- Wet Macular Degeneration occurs when blood vessels grow beneath the retina, leaking blood and fluid into the retina
- Dry Macular Degeneration occurs when the macular thins
Macular Degeneration Symptoms and Risk Factors
The symptoms of macular degeneration may include:
- Blurred, dimmed, or fuzzy vision
- Dark or empty areas in the center of your vision
- Appearance of straight lines (such as telephone poles, sentences on a page, etc.) as being wavy
You may be at risk for macular degeneration if:
- You are over age 40
- You have a family history of the disease
- You have certain nutritional deficiencies
- You are overexposed to UV radiation
If you have any of these risk factors and are experiencing symptoms of macular degeneration, contact us to make an appointment with one of our experienced board-certified ophthalmologists.
Macular Degeneration Treatment
There is no known cure for macular degeneration, but progression and symptoms can be slowed. Treatments to slow progression may include:
- Dietary supplements - Evidence suggests that antioxidants or zinc supplements may help manage macular degeneration.
- Injections - Medications can be injected into the eye to prevent abnormal blood vessels from growing.
- Photodynamic therapy (PDT) - Injections of Visudyne® are activated with a laser inside your body. The drug helps destroy abnormal blood vessels under the macula.
- Laser surgery - Abnormal blood cells that have grown under the macula are carefully treated with a laser.
- Low vision aids - Magnification devices, special glasses, bright lights, and other devices can help you depend more on peripheral vision.
Since peripheral vision is unaffected, macular degeneration does not cause total blindness. With proper treatment, you can lead a normal, independent lifestyle.
